Silent Night Tour

Here in Oberndorf near Salzburg, the famous Christmas carol "Silent Night" was first sung in 1818 in the boatmen´s church of St. Nicholas. The idea for the carol came from the priest Joseph Mohr, who, on Christmas eve 1818 proposed to Franz Xaver Gruber to write a melody to a poem Mohr had written in 1816.

The song had its first performance during midnight mass 1818. Later, due to floods, the town was moved upstream. The church of St. Nicholas was torn down and in its place the Silent-Night-Memorial-Chapel was consecrated in 1937.
